Remembering Judge

One of the most searing images from 9/11 is that of Victim 0001, FDNY Chaplain Mychal Judge, being carried out from the rubble of the South Tower. For ‘Father Mike’, as with all deaths at the FDNY, there is much more to remember and memorialize than those last moments.

Synopsis

One of the most searing images from 9/11 is that of Victim 0001, FDNY Chaplain Mychal Judge, being carried out from the rubble of the South Tower. He would be one of 343 members of the Fire Department, and nearly 3,000 victims to die at ground zero that day. Although this photo instantly became a symbol of the loss on 9/11, the FDNY chooses to remember Father Mike by how he lived his life and not how he died. As with all deaths at the FDNY, there is much more to remember and memorialize than those last moments. Through his devoted work as a Fire Department Chaplain, a Friar, and a mentor, Father Judge lived a life of kindness, service, and leadership- one that touched the lives of so many people. He brought hope to members of the Department and their families during their darkest hours, and was a source of inspiration during some of New York City’s most difficult times. And still, his actions and words continue to ring true today. Although we may be a quarter century removed from the events of 9/11, the people, like Father Mychal Judge, continue to bind us together and give us strength.
